The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
